Using more than one mode of transportation to move goods, such as airplanes, trucks, railroads, and ships.

When products are shipped across domestic boundaries via domestic intermodal containers, the process of intermodal shipping works as follows:

A truck chassis is used to load products into a container.
Containers are hauled by truck to intermodal ramps, usually not too far away. The truck movement is called drayage.
When the container is lifted off the chassis, it is placed on a flat car or well car so it can be shipped by train.
For the container to be delivered to a warehouse, store or distribution center, it is transferred back to a truck at another intermodal ramp.
