Less than container load
The term LCL, abbreviated as Less than Container Load, refers to a small ocean freight shipment for which the shipper does not contract for a full container due to insufficient quantities. Using a container freight station (CFS), a freight forwarder may consolidate multiple LCL shipments, gate them in at the origin's container yard (CY), and deconsolidate at the destination.
LCL shipping is easier to secure during times of congestion and peak season than FCL shipping. Low volume shipments can be easily transported via LCL shipping, a much cheaper alternative. LCL shipping is also cheaper when the cargo isn't urgent.
