Unladen weight, or tare weight, refers to the weight of the tractor and trailer when empty. A container's tare weight is determined by subtracting the net weight from the gross weight.
An intermodal container is usually marked with the tare weight so that when the equipment is loaded, the gross weight can be calculated accurately.
