The space in a drum or tank that is not filled with liquid.

Definition: It refers to the distance between the liquid surface of a tank and the top of its interior surface.

In ullage tables, volumes are calculated by measuring the distance between the rim of an "ullage" hole and some reference point inside a tank. This is called sounding. A "Sounding table" may complement or replace "ullage tables" in measuring liquid depth in a tank.
