Monitoring system used by harbors or ports for monitoring ships, similar to air traffic control for monitoring aircraft.

Vessel traffic services, or VTS, provide ships with information such as the location of other vessels or weather hazard warnings and extensive management of traffic within a port or waterway.

Ships entering a VTS area are usually reported to the authorities, usually by radio, and then tracked by the VTS control center.

The VTS operator may contact ships directly if an incident is expected or in areas where traffic flow is regulated to advise what action to take. Ships must monitor a specific frequency for navigational or other warnings.
