In 1974, the York Antwerp rules were established to establish rights and responsibilities for shipping lines and shippers in cases where cargo must be thrown overboard to prevent damage to a vessel. As a result of these rules, the law of general average, a maritime law, has been codified; under this law, all parties involved with a particular shipment are legally bound to share equitably any loss resulting from the sacrifice of cargo on board in order to save the remaining shipments. A number of amendments to the York Antwerp rules have been made since 1994.
